by Bill Gates
Bill Gates certainly has a lot of expertise when it comes to climate change. He investigated its causes and effects, talked to experts in physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science, and finance. Based on this extensive research, he draws conclusions on what we must do in order to avoid the climate disaster we are currently facing. Starting with describing the challenges we face, and explaining in detail why more sustainable solutions – and in particular reaching net-zero emissions as soon as possible – are crucial to avoid the climate catastrophe.
While Harald Welzer describes in detail (see also my previous post) why our current way of thinking that improving technologies and increasing efficiency is most likely sufficient to succeed, Bill Gates takes an opposite approach. Despite a similar starting point that our current way of life is not sustainable in the long-run, Gates focuses on technological innovations and increasing efficiency of existing technologies to reduce emissions. He acknowledges that in many areas breakthrough technologies are needed.
As Bill Gates makes clear, achieving zero emissions is not a simple task, but he sets out a plan for governments, industry and the individual to achieve this goal.
