Canada’s Rockies are such a beautiful place on earth and there are many places that I would describe as magical. But I see why Spirit Island in

Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park is truly a special place. It is one of the most photographed spots in the Canadian Rockies and most likely you have seen one of the many pictures taken from a boat heading towards the island. The scenery is spectacular and the shape of this tiny tied island with its green trees contrasts beautifully with its surroundings. But if you take the time to get off the boat and walk around the island, you get an even better feeling who this place feels so special.

According to First Nations mythology, this enchanted little island used to be the secret meeting place of two young lovers from feuding tribes living in the area. However, when the father of the young women learned about this, he banned his daughter from ever returning to that place. Her lover kept returning to the island, desperately hoping for her to return. She never came back and he never saw her again. He never gave up, though, until he passed away on the island. His spirit is said to still haunt the island waiting for his love of his live to come back to him.

When we visited we did not encounter this young man’s spirit, but we met another inhabitant of the island as you can see in the picture.
